Chapter 13

Mia rushed to Frank and Stew and removed their crowns. Frank’s eyes widened, staring at the bucket and mop in his hand. “What? Where am I?”

Stew, holding a broom and dustpan, looked at Mia and frowned. “Mia? What happened to us?”

She held up the crowns. “The Mad Scientist was controlling our minds with these. He made me his princess. It was awful, like he was playing god and showcasing his creation to the world, parading me around like an accessory.” Mia took a deep breath. “But it’s over now. Atlas and his family are here. They rescued us from the Mad Scientist and shut down the droids.”

Frank and Stew looked over at the group, with Atlas waving hello. However, Frank’s eyes were fixed on Kelso. “You! You did this. I’m going to kill you!”

“Wait … he made you a Princess?” Stew said, looking at Mia. “And us … the cleaning crew? Well, that’s not fair.”

Frank, a tall and intimidating man with thick gray facial hair, muscular arms, and a full-sleeve tattoo on his right arm, stormed toward Kelso. Atlas tried to stop him, placing his hands on Frank’s chest, but Frank pushed through him with his fists clenched tight, and his chest puffed out.

“Frank, wait,” Atlas said. “Kelso gave up the plans for the weapon. Your mission is over. We have what you came for.”

Frank stopped short of Kelso and looked at Stew, who, although shorter and skinnier than Frank, appeared equally intimidating with his bald head and facial piercings. “Let’s go home,” Stew said. “I’ve got a headache the size of this crater.” He winced and rubbed his forehead.

Frank turned to Atlas. “So, what now?”

Tristan answered for him, saying, “We need to get home. I’ll open a wormhole, and we can return to Earth A27.”

Frank stared at Tristan. “Hey, I know you. You’re the President’s son. What are you doing here?”

“I’m completing the mission you couldn’t finish,” Tristan replied.

Frank lunged at Tristan. “What did you s—”

“No. We can’t leave yet,” Atlas shouted. Frank stopped himself, and all eyes turned to Atlas, waiting for an explanation.

“Are you crazy?” Tristan said. “We have what we need. You got your friends back, and I have the plans for the Aperture. Allister Craum is going to walk through that door any second now.”

Atlas looked at the group. “I need to find the family. The ones who helped us.”

Malcolm took a step forward. “Atlas, the transmitter has been shut down. They’ve been turned off like the rest of the androids.”

“I know,” Atlas said. “But I made Camila a promise. If we can bring them back with us, maybe we can turn them back on.” He turned to Nico. “Is it possible?”

Nico nodded. “Hmm … I think so. But we would need more Element X.”

Atlas looked at the glass container holding the meteor and grabbed a rifle from the ground. He ran up the staircase and used the butt of the gun to shatter the container, then chipped off a large piece of the meteor and brought it back down to Nico.
